  • "Every man takes the limits of his own vision for the limits of the world." - Arthur Schopenhauer

Four people on four different street corners witness the same traffic accident. The police arrive and ask each of the four people to describe what happened. And get four different versions of how the event happened.

Which of the four witnesses is right about what happened?

    All of them.

    And none of them.

The same is true in life.

How we view ourselves, our world, and the events of our lives depend upon our viewpoint. The proverbial lens through which we see creates this viewpoint. The lens is the system of beliefs, expectations, and presuppositions we hold. You use this lens when you evaluate your circumstances and opportunities.

For example, let's say two people walk into an audition for a leading role. Both are rejected with equal harsh criticism for their character portrayal and delivery.

One actor returns home, depleted, and validates his belief that he'll never make it as an actor. He gives up his dream of a theatrical career and sets about finding a 'real' job.

The other actor returns home and quickly writes down the critical remarks. He studies the remarks and adjusts his performance. He rehearses and rehearses and rehearses the scene applying what he has learned from the botched audition. He then either secures a second audition with a better chance of winning the role or goes on to the next audition better prepared. He knows Discount Oakley Sunglasses, with certainty Replica Ray Bans, that he'll make it as an actor and that failed auditions are opportunities to learn and improve his craft.

Where one person sees limitation, the other sees opportunity.

Two different artists get up in the morning and read the same newspaper. One sees nothing but gloom and doom. The economy is in the toilet, job losses escalate, the auto industry is bankrupt and banks are failing. She crawls back into bed with a defeated outlook. Why paint? The economy is so depressed no one is buying art these days. Why bother? And after days and days and days of not painting, she gives up on his art, gives up on herself. She leads a life of quiet desperation.

The other artist puts down the paper and is more determined than ever to paint. Art is inspiration. Inspiration begets creativity. Creativity begets abundance. She knows that even in a depressed economy, people still buy art. People want to surround themselves with beauty, art, and inspiration. She knows that when she's painting she feels good about herself and her life. World events do not control how she feels.

How do you view your experience? Is it time to examine your 'lens'? Is it time for a new pair of glasses?

Together with our friends Frank and Mila and a mixed group from Singapore and Indonesia Amy and I spent our "vacation" in Tibet from 27 May to 02 June 2009. A great experience that we probably only make once. Why this adventure? For a long time the "Roof of the World" was one of my dream destinations. Unfortunately, I did not know that this would be less a vacation, but rather an adventure with some quite tough encounters.

Our flight from Singapore via Shanghai and Xian to Xining is without any problems. Our China Eastern Airline has changed over the last few years a great deal: There are almost exclusively Airbus planes with modern furnishings. Only on domestic flights, the equipment is not made for non-Chinese people. So I push with my rather normal-shaped nose the back of the seat in front of me when he decides to sleep. Chinese design. The best would be all the seats would automatically turn to sleep at the same time, like a pack of biscuits in De Beukelaer all tilt at once. No more misunderstandings and lots of space. I try to imagine how American citizens would fit into this kind of seat. That should probably look something like how a half-melted ice-cream between two waffles.

Our stopover in Shanghai Pudong should be without any problems - just in the transit area of the airport. However, our plans are slightly changed. Due to the global swine flu epidemic, outside visitors to China are not immediately allowed to leave the plane, but need to undergo a health test. A team of four physicians dressed in space suits enters the plane, while all passengers remain in their seats. These physicians carry infrared temperature meters, which are shaped like pistols. With the pistols they "shoot" from a distance of one meter on the forehead of each passenger and then read the temperature. Since this action is probably already in flesh and blood Wholesale Oakleys, one loses just a bit of time. After a few minutes everything is over. Only one thing must not happen: There must be no coughing or sneezing to be heard. This would cause a complicated investigation process to trigger quarantine for all passengers at the end.
